Sake, which is considered an integral part of Japanese culture, has now received outstanding recognition from UNESCO: The rice wine has been added to the list of «Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity».
This decision was made at a meeting of the Committee for the Safeguarding of Cultural Heritage in Luque, Paraguay, where a total of 45 cultural practices and products were recognized worldwide.
The UNESCO award aims to recognize not only the artisanal art of sake production, but also a tradition that has existed for over 1,000 years.
«Sake is considered a divine gift and is essential for social and cultural events in Japan», Kano Takehiro, Japan's ambassador to UNESCO, told The Associated Press. «It means a lot to Japan and to the Japanese».
